Excerpt:

Words from my childhood stopped us at the front door.

How it begins is how it goes.

It was cracked and faded. Chipped and forgotten in so many ways. Everly traced the letters with her finger. “Who wrote this?”

“Vandals. Damn vandals. You’d think in a nice area like this, we could avoid such pointless crime.”

“Callum Andrew,” she warned.

I sighed. “My mother wrote it.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. It’s just something she and my pop used to tell us as kids.”

“It kind of reminds me of something.” Everly turned to me. “One of my nurses gave me a box of paper dolls for my birthday one year. Do you know what those are?”

“Yeah, my sister had them.”

She smiled. “I liked the idea of those dolls. You could just snap their lives on them, and if they wanted something new, something different, you just chose something else, and suddenly a little girl was a business woman or a cheerleader. I started to think about life like that, how interchangeable we all are. When I first met Truscott, he was about to have his millionth surgery. And all I could think as I watched him was, if I could just snap off my heart and give it to him, he’d be all better. But it’s never going to be that easy. I was born with hopelessness, and, chances are, Truscott will die with the same hopeless feeling. His mother will endure that same hopeless feeling.”

I tutted, jokingly. “You have too much doubt in my ability to steal your heart, Everly Anne.”

“That,” she said, turning away, “is so very untrue. If anything, I believe too much in your ability.”

“Good to hear, as I am one skilled man when it comes to stealing the hearts of pretty girls.”

“Oh, are you?” She laughed.

“No,” I replied. “Not really.”

“I do doubt that.”

We stared at the door for a moment.

Everly finally asked, “So, how do we begin, Callum Andrew?”

“Hmm,” I thought. “How about with our first day of freedom. We start with freedom.”

“Freedom,” she echoed. “Freedom sounds like a dream.”

Excerpt:

“Kellan and Shay Braden, why is it always you two? And if it’s not the two of you, it’s your other two siblings. All the time.” Mr. Mirchak approached, shaking his head. “Who’d you fight this time, Kellan?”

I should’ve felt something, maybe remorse, but there was nothing. Matt had assaulted me. Kellan felt it and protected me. And if Matt chose to run away, then that was Matt’s decision. But still…I should’ve felt guilty.

Kellan drew to his full height of six one and squared his lean shoulders against the portly forty-something teacher. He shook his head. “Do you see anyone, Mr. Mirchak?”

The balding teacher shook his head. “I never see anyone, Kellan. That’s the problem. But I know that
someone’s going to show up with a busted eye, maybe a shoulder. I don’t know, but there’s always
something.” He turned away, but mumbled over his shoulder, “…too damn scared to say a thing…”

Kellan waited until the teacher had turned the corner before he flashed a smile. “What do you think?”

I rolled my eyes and kicked my locker open. “You didn’t have to hurt his jaw.”

“Right.” Kellan fell against the locker beside mine and studied me. “At least this way, he’ll shut up all the time. I’m getting tired of his mouth. The guy thinks he knows you too much. He doesn’t know anything.”

“Still…” I muttered as I bent inside to grab my book.

“Still,” Kellan mimicked me and yanked me out. “Why didn’t you do something, Shay?”

“What are you talk—?”

“Don’t. Not with me,” Kellan interrupted. “You could’ve stopped him long before I came around the
corner. You knew I was coming. Why didn’t you stop him?”

“Maybe I wanted to hear his rhetoric on how hot I must be for him.”

“Don’t be funny, Shay. You’re not the funny one, remember?”

I smirked. “That’s funny. I don’t think that role’s been taken in our family.”

Kellan’s hand tightened on my arm. He pulled me closer and bent his head to my ear. “You always wait for me. Why?”

Maybe I couldn’t bring myself to do what he enjoyed. Maybe I liked knowing he’d always protect me or that someone would protect me. Maybe…maybe I enjoyed the sick pleasure knowing that someone like Matt could never really hurt me, though he didn’t know that fact. Or maybe…I whispered, “I don’t know, okay?”

I didn’t know. I had ideas. I had possible scenarios, but the only truth was, I could’ve easily broken
Matt’s hold on me and I didn’t.

Author Info:

Hello~ (waves)

I didn't begin writing until after undergraduate college. There'd been storylines and characters in my head all my life, but it came to a boiling point one day and I HAD to get them out of me. So the computer was booted up and I FINALLY felt it click. Writing is what I needed to do. After that, I had to teach myself how to write. I can't blame my teachers for not teaching me all those years in school. It was my fault. I was one of the students that was wishing I was anywhere but at school! So after that day, it took me lots of work until I was able to put together something that resembled a novel. I'm hoping I got it right since someone must be reading this profile! And I hope you keep enjoying my future stories.

I took a drink of my tea. “I was supposed to just walk away after ten days. I thought that was possible. But clearly I was naïve in thinking so.”

“Hey. Don’t beat yourself up.”

“What if all this is too good to be true? They say if it’s too good to be true then it’s not real. I’m scared that August and I will drift apart, and I don’t know if I can handle that.”

She reached over and covered my hand with hers. “Quit over thinking it. Just go with it. Don’t you think you deserve to feel this way? He’s your first boyfriend. Yeah, you’ll have doubts, even fights. But that’s why they invented makeup sex.” She grinned.

“Melanie!”

She laughed. “Anyway, it’s good to sit and chat, but I should get you back.”

“Will you tell Mom hi for me? And that I love her. And that I’m sorry.”

Melanie stood and hugged me. “Of course. I got your back, always.” She flicked my hair over my shoulder.

We loaded back into the car and headed back to the house. We talked candidly on the way back, and soon, we arrived. “I guess I’ll say bye to you now. I don’t know if I’ll stop at the house or not.” She exited the car and hugged me tight.

Tell Me You Want Me - Amelia James

First Chapter First Paragraph (from Prologue)

"They're fighting again." Charles Austin Sinclair III looked up from his Nintendo football game toward his bedroom door. His parents' angry voices reached him even though his solid oak door was closed.

Freeing Lost Souls by Tracy Kincaid Excerpts

Freeing Lost Souls by Tracy Kincaid

First Chapter First Paragraph

This is my first time going to Gettysburg. I've always wanted to go there and see the place I've grown up hearing about. My dad is a huge Civil War buff. Since before I was born, he's always watched movies or read about it. I'm not sure why he never became a history teacher since he seems to know so much about it. It also turns out that we have Civil War in our blood, as well. Some distant cousin on my dad's side was in the war. That makes it even more special for me.

34%

You can't tell when he wears clothes just how well built he is, not body builder built, but hard-working country boy built.

56%

The sun peaks out from behind the trees as we walk. I've never seen anything so beautiful. "I wish I had brought my art supplies with me."

Quotables

He'll retrieve anything you want him to, occasionally. Mostly he gets what he wants and gives you what he wants you to have.

I hear an occasional clap of thunder, like a sound of a cannon being shot far away.

Good God, it has been way too long since I've been with a man. And Bruce is all man from what I've seen.

"Yeah, Benny. It's no big deal, buddy. Let's show this lovely lady a good time tonight. Show her how we live up out here in the sticks." We all laugh at Bruce's attempt at talking like a country boy.

"It's romantic, you know, in a morbid kind of way...."

It is important to keep track of history. If things hadn't happened the way they did, we wouldn't be here right now. History is important. Other people's mistakes and their accomplishments give us something to learn from.

Ice Lake - Stone Cold by Julie Miller

Stone Cold by Julie Miller

First Chapter First Paragraph

"I found her."
Daniel Stone turned his face to the wind and braced against the crystals of snow biting into his skin.
This storm was going to be a bad one. The certainty came from the years he'd spent growing up on this mountain, as much as from the weather warnings that were shutting down this region of the northern Rockies in Montana. The blizzard was almost here. He could read it in the rising wind speed and in the moisture that turned the dry snow, so perfect for skiing, into icy shards that meant trouble for all but the most experienced of mountain survivalists like himself. He knew Mount Atlas the way mamas knew their babies, the way a shaman knew the earth itself. And he knew that in the next few days - in the next few hours, even - everything around him would change. The storm would bring whiteout conditions, windchills, closed roads and buried landmarks.

Page 34 (pg 241 of Ice Lake)

Other than the fact they were using candles and kerosene lanterns instead of electricity to add more light to the meager sunshine seeping through the windows, it could pass for any afternoon at the resort lodge during the height of ski season

Page 56 (pg 263 of Ice Lake)

The older man was already backing toward the hallway.  "I need you to come and look at something," he said.

Review

This last story added an element that the other two stories did not. The author gave us insight to the character of the second strangler. The insight given gives clues to the readers of his identity before the Deputy figures it out for herself. While the added insight was appreciated, and I enjoyed it better than Gone Cold, it still failed to hold my attention as well as Cold Heat.

Ice Lake - Cold Heat By Delores Fossen

Cold Heat by Delores Fossen

First Chapter First Paragraph

Special Agent Leah Gray stared out at the ice-scabbed landscape and thought about the woman she'd gotten killed. She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, hoping to block out the images.

Pg 34 (pg 137 of Ice Lake)

Normally, Leah wouldn't have taken the alibi at face value, but everything in the room indicated that the two had been at sexcapades for hours and hours. Maybe even days.

Pg 56 (pg 159 of Ice Lake)

'When I went running into that house and found you nearly dead, I wasn't thinking like an FBI agent. I reacted like your...friend. Your former lover.'

Quotables

He could put up a front. The cool facade of a badass federal agent. Unfortunately, a cool facade wasn't worth spit when it came to convincing her that they had to get out of here.

She shook her head. 'I Should have known.'
'Right. Because of the ESP that the Bureau issued you when you became and FBI agent.'

Yeah, that was Leah, all right. A woman of contradictions, who had a rebellious side.
'Hell's bells, Leah, I can still see his handprint on you.'

She'd be terrified, and probably was having the mother lode of hellish flashbacks.

Review

I enjoyed Cold Heat better than Gone Cold. There was more romance than the first story. Also, the prose had a sense of humor to it that Gone Cold did not.  The characters were better developed. I was pulled in to all aspects of this story.

Ice Lake - Gone Cold by B.J Daniels

Gone Cold by B.J Daniels

First Chapter First Paragraph

'Is everything all right, honey?'
Morgan Sinclair stirred from her dark thoughts as Tom turned off the highway onto a snowy narrow road. She suddenly felt anxious as she looked at the glistening, cold white mountains ahead.

Pg 34

She surreptitiously studied the other guests, wondering who was staying in the cabin closest to them. Morgan didn't lie to herself; she was searching for 'A.'

Pg 56

Had he gotten the SUV stuck on purpose, so she couldn't leave him once he told her the truth?

Review

Gone Cold was straight forward suspense from the first page. Morgan's new husband Tom gets a text message that has her concerned and she slowly realizes that she knows very little about the man she recently married. I enjoyed the suspense of the first story as it kept the pace and makes it easy to finish the almost 100 page suspense story.
